'Pig Brother' Makers Try to Cultivate a Little Animal Magic

The makers of Big Brother are working on a new TV show with celebrities working on a farm in one of the most isolated areas in Wales. Ten stars will be stranded on the farm for two months, with no electricity, phones or creature comforts. And they will all have to milk cows, pluck chickens, shear sheep and help animals give birth in the show, dubbed Pig Brother.

Pounds 10m Smokies Bonus

The trade in smokies could be legalised in the near future with a pounds 10m-a-year lift to the British sheep industry. Pressure is growing for the legalisation of the distinctive product as a way of helping animal welfare and safety as well as boosting trade. National Sheep Association chief executive John Thorley is optimistic that a Food Standards Agency report due early next year will open the way to legalisation.

Scrap 'Obsolete' Tracking: Mps

The main system for tracking livestock movements has been branded obsolete and in need of an urgent upgrade. MPs on the Commons' public accounts committee say it is more expensive and less efficient than systems used in other EU states. Under the system individual cattle movements are tracked by the computerised Cattle Tracing System, and movements of batches of cattle, sheep and pigs are recorded on the Animal Movements Licensing System.

Albanian Interest in Welsh Meat

A new export market place for Welsh meat came a step nearer at the weekend following talks at the Royal Show. The Albanian government is considering a trade agreement to import Welsh lamb, beef and pork from a pounds 2.1m abattoir and processing plant at Cwmann, Lampeter. Anti-Gm Protesters Arrested at Depot

Twenty anti-GM protesters were arrested following demonstrations outside distribution depots belonging to supermarket chain Sainsbury's on Friday. Cardiff's stranglehold on BBC Wales is to end, its new chairman and director general pledged yesterday. On the day the BBC celebrated 50 years of television news, chairman Michael Grade yesterday said he wanted to capture ITV's role as the broadcaster which best connected with people.
