THE number of grass fires started deliberately in Wales has increased by more than a quarter in the past year, putting lives at risk and costing the taxpayer millions of pounds.

A total of 6,967 grassland, woodland and crop fires blazed through Wales in the past year - an increase of 26% on the previous period.
