SIR - As a friend of Dr Margaret Kennedy, whose group, Ministers and Clergy Sexual Abuse, asked for an interview with Pope Benedict XVI during his visit, I write to comment on Professor Robin Whatley's defence of the Roman Catholic Church in general and the Pope in particular in relation to the current scandal (Letters, Sept 16).

Firstly, Professor Whatley's production of a flood of statistics proving that the vulnerable are safer with Catholic priests than with teachers, doctors, farmers, sports directors etc ignores some basic realities, beginning with the spiritual.
