Cash-strapped Welsh schools could save up to pounds 20m a year - enough to employ 1,000 extra teachers - by getting better deals on equipment like stationery and photocopiers. New figures suggest head teachers can save up to 10% on their "procurement" bill by buying in bulk as part of a larger public sector consortium. The Assembly says if all 1,800 schools in Wales made the same 10% reduction to their budgets this would produce an annual saving of up to pounds 20m.
With the average newly qualified teacher starting on around pounds 20,000 a year this would be enough to flood the profession in Wales with 1,000 extra staff.See the full content of this document
