NEVER mind the Beatles. It's been a huge week for vegetables, and whose head wouldn't be turned by a paean to the aubergine, lessons about the health benefits of a brassica or news of allotment wars? Admittedly I'm composing this epistle while drinking from a Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band mug, staring at "the boys" on the cover of umpteen magazines and wondering whether it will ever be worth shelling out pounds 200 for the mono mixes of their albums. While my wallet gently leaks.

To get my thoughts away from the latest round of Beatles hysteria, I turned to the comment pages of Fleet Street and found this editorial about aubergines: "They look glorious, they taste fabulous".
