Retro Report May, 1954 - Roger bannister, the 24- year-old St Mary's Hospital medical student and AAA champion, yesterday became the first man in athletics history to run a mile in less than four minutes.

In unfavourable conditions - a 15 mph cross wind - he ran the four laps of the Iffley-road track at Oxford in 3 min 59.4 sec, so attaining the aim of all middle-distance runners.
