Ambulance staff who have been attacked while on duty have welcomed a new law to safeguard emergency workers. But one technician said he was unsure how much a deterrent it would be, as verbal and physical assaults have become part of their workload. The Emergency Workers (Obstruction) Act, which came into force last week, makes it an offence to attack, obstruct or hinder firefighters or paramedics.

It was introduced as it emerged that attacks on ambulance staff have risen by 59%, to 285 recorded physical and verbal assaults during 2005-06.
