SIR - In former times of prosperity, when first introduced, bonuses were an incentive to increase productivity, but to achieve the required target it encouraged short cuts along with shoddy workmanship, and in time became the accepted norm as part of wages.

Now recent examples in various sectors point towards them rewarding poor performance and failure.
