Peter Hain was facing fresh embarrassment last night after the Prime Minister branded his donations blunders "incompetent". But Gordon Brown also attempted to bolster the embattled Work and Pensions Secretary by insisting he believed he would escape serious punishment for failing to disclose more than pounds 103,000 in gifts to his Labour deputy leadership bid.
