The days of dominance by Middle England are on the way out, according to new research which suggests the UK's most influential group is now the 'Big Britons'. A major survey has shown the stereotype of grumbling middle-class pensioners like Victor Meldrew has been replaced. Instead Britain is dominated by 20 million conscientious consumers with a spending power of pounds 238bn. And whereas Victor Meldrew embodied all the negative associations of Middle England - being traditional, reactionary and conservative - the new movement has its own standard bearers.
Celebrities such as Fern Britton, Jamie Oliver, cricketer Andrew Flintoff and Glastonbury festival organiser Michael Eavis are all being seen as Big Britons.See the full content of this document
