A STRING of onions and a tin of sardines may not be the usual souvenirs to be trawling back through customs but for committed foodies it can be a wrench to leave the smells and tastes of a gourmet hot spot behind In Brittany, at the port of Saint Portieux in particular, the speciality is scallops but since they don't travel well, they'll have to remain a tantalising memory. In fact, there are so many memories to bring back from a gastronomic trip to the land of our closest cross-Channel cousins.

Brittany is famous for its seafood and with good reason, but it scores a lip-smacking 10 out of 10 for variety too.
