SIR - The comments made by Dafydd Elis-Thomas reveal an astounding confusion about the history of Welsh nationalism. Whether the terms 'independence' of 'full national status' were used, the aim was always to enable Wales to take her place and play her role among the family of nations.

Such nationalism was never xenophobic, and always international in outlook. In contrast with that brand of human brotherhood which stopped at the Straits of Dover, it aspired to be European and international.
