His rich bass-baritone sound echoes through the corridors, foyers and cafe-bars of the famous Covent Garden venue as director Tim Albery puts him through his paces.

An hour or so later, a relaxed Terfel is sitting in the artists' restaurant, where he's tucking into a lunch of jacket potato, beef and corn on the cob.
