First there was Lassie the Hollywood film star collie. And now there is Bud, a real life canine hero from Swansea. When Bud's owner, eight-year-old Nye Thomas, broke both arms in a 30ft fall from a tree swing onto the muddy banks of the River Tawe, Bud, also aged eight, went into action.

The cross-breed - part-Black Labrador and part-collie - rushed to dazed Nye's side as the river water, swollen by days of heavy rain before the weekend, rushed by just inches away.
