WE applaud efforts to ensure that more people from deprived backgrounds are able to continue their studies at university.
But in recent weeks conflicting evidence has emerged about the degree to which Assembly Government efforts to increase the proportion of poorer students have been successful. Figures comparing the raw number of students from poorer local authorities in Wales who went on to university in 1998 and 2008 show there has been a welcome increase. Yet other statistics suggest the proportion of university students from the poorest 100 communities may have stalled.See the full content of this document
