Summary

A new database offers to gauge how posh you are by the street that you live in - using only its name. By cataloguing street names against information about wealth and social status, academics have produced a database which allows you to find out what your street name says about you. The database, which gives each street name a social ranking, found residents of lanes, woods or commons tend to be the most wealthy, while those living in terraces, squares or streets, especially those named after politicians, are the least well off.

The research, entitled How the British have Named their Streets: Lessons in Geography and History, analysed 745,336 residential streets in Britain, looking at both the first and second part of the name and using success in GCSEs as an indicator of social class and wealth.
