BARRY GEORGE walked free from court yesterday after eight years battling to prove he did not kill TV presenter Jill Dando.

The 48-year-old's eyes welled with tears as he was cleared by an Old Bailey jury of Miss Dando's murder in 1999 after an eight-week retrial.

He told his solicitor, "I can't believe it" and later in a statement said that he was "overwhelmed".

His sister Michelle Diskin, who has tirelessly campaigned for his freedom, leapt to her feet and punched the air, crying "Yes" as the verdict was returned.
