AN EXHIBITION marking the centenary of the birth of the realist painter Josef Herman who turned hard-working miners into works of art will open next month.

Born into a poor Jewish family in Warsaw, Poland in 1911 he is known for his depictions of the Welsh mining community in Ystradgynlais.
