WELSH rugby players are used to carrying the hopes of the nation on their muscular shoulders. But they have an extra responsibility this season - put a smile on our faces in the midst of economic gloom.

That was the message from team manager Alan Phillips ahead of yesterday's opening clash with Scotland. Affectionately known as Thumper, Phillips punched home the need for Wales' Grand Slam Champions to take the bite out of the recession by giving supporters' spirits a diversionary lift.
