He way school meals have leapt up the political agenda is to be welcomed - although it seems the practical impact of this has been limited. A year after celebrity chef Jamie Oliver began his campaign to improve the food pupils eat, the amount spent on each school meal has only risen by 5p.

The average spent on each meal remains, in many areas, less than 50p. The rise is welcome but is clearly not enough.
