It would be fair to say if there were any prospective investors lurking in the stands at Carrow Road they would not have been eagerly reaching for their chequebooks. The Cardiff performance was as baffling as it was dire. Following the final whistle, rumour and counter-rumour swept the ground: Sam Hammam had resigned, Milan Mandaric was coming in, aliens had landed in East Anglia and convinced City players they didn't really want promotion anyway.

The truth, that financial backers had stepped in to start writing off the club's estimated pounds 24m debt and Hammam had indeed resigned with Peter Ridsdale taking over as chairman, was either great news for the club or the end of civilisation as we know it, depending on your penchant for paranoia.
