SIR - If the Welsh Assembly Government has failed when it comes to education, it is concerning the most decisive factor of all on educational performance. This factor (which rarely makes the headlines) has been noted by British sociologists for decades. This factor is of course the socio-economic background of the child, ie class.

From the age of four, middle class children of average intelligence will begin to overtake working class children of high intelligence and they never look back. While it has long been argued that the education system was designed by and for the middle classes, several things are clear.
