Further-education colleges in Wales have recently received details of their 2004/05 funding allocations from Elwa. There are also several issues concerning the financing of colleges in the short and long term.

The recurrent budget - the amount directed at teaching and learning - will be pounds 242m. This includes pounds 20m earmarked solely for pay - pounds 9m consolidated from 2003/04 and a projected pounds 11m for 2004/05. The core budget of pounds 222m has been frozen. Colleges face another very difficult financial year, as they have to meet increasing financial demands and non-pay inflation.
