PATIENT safety could be at risk because a shortage of doctors in Welsh hospitals, medical leaders warned last night.

The Western Mail has learnt that there were 164.5 vacancies for junior doctors - the term for any member of staff below consultant level - across Wales at the end of December.

The largest numbers of vacancies are in A&E departments, paediatrics, general medicine and trauma and orthopaedics.

No services have been directly affected as NHS trusts try to adjust rotas to cover the vacant posts.
