I have witnessed the worst that mankind has to offer. From helping to identify human remains from 9/11 and travelling to Rwanda to testify at the UN tribunal on genocide, to assisting in identifying the war dead from World War Two and Korea. It's just part of the job and you have to be psychologically prepared to do the work.

I used to work for the office of the Chief Medical Examiner [in the US], but writing takes up lots of time now. I'm on my 13th in the Temperance Brennan series. Because of writing novels, I cherry- pick my scientific work, taking on only the more challenging and unusual cases. I currently have three child homicide cases, and those are tough. But you have to develop a coping mechanism to be able to do the work - or just do something else. Every time you see something that you think, 'This is the most horrendous thing I've ever seen', a year later something worse comes along. I don't think I'm shocked any more, but I am dismayed at some of the things people can do to other people.
