Summary
Patients will get on-the-spot access to senior doctors and diagnostic tests at a new hospital unit in Swansea. The emergency surgical decision making unit at Morriston Hospital is designed to take the pressure off the hospital's A&E department. It will fast- track emergency surgical patients needing assessment and observation into the new facility The unit, being developed in Ward D, is expected to be operational by the end of the year, and could deal with 6,000 surgical and urological emergencies a year. Emergency surgical patients, who are usually referred to hospital by their GP, will be sent to the unit for assessment by a senior medic from the surgical team.
It is hoped these patients will receive quicker access to specialists for a decision about their treatment.See the full content of this document
