Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies was last night under fire for refusing to say how much money it was costing to keep an international car rally in Wales. Tory AM Alun Cairns was told the information was commercially confidential, even though a public statement made by Mr Davies last September suggested the Assembly Government could be spending around pounds 13m to bring the Wales Rally GB here for the next five years.

In response to Mr Cairns's question asking how much the sponsorship deal amounted to, Mr Davies said, 'Details of sponsorship provided through the WDA is held to be 'commercial in confidence'. In addition, because of the number of public bodies involved in supporting the rally, the disproportionate cost of researching this information means that I am unable to provide a response.'
