Former Mastermind host Magnus Magnusson, who has died from cancer, was yesterday described by his successor John Humphreys as 'irreplaceable'. Magnusson, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October, died peacefully at his home in Scotland on Sunday night, surrounded by his family. The broadcaster was regarded as the face of BBC cult quiz Mastermind, which he presented for 25 years from the first programme in 1972.

Welshman John Humphrys has been host of Mastermind since 2003.
