A disastrous drop in English beef production could push down prime cattle prices in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The National Beef Association says England may produce less beef following Defra's decision to base the new Single Farm Payment on an area model, and farmers in the rest of Britain could feel the effects, even though their devolved governments have chosen a more farmer-friendly form of de-coupling subsidies from production.
