Summary
SIR - The court ruling on Thursday on the Government's plans to build nuclear power stations raises the question of consultation. The Government is accused of not consulting properly before announcing plans to support the building of nuclear power stations. A High Court judge has pronounced these plans are illegal.
What about the plans to replace Trident? How much consultation has taken place? In March a vote is to be taken in the Commons on whether to spent a minimum of pounds 25bn to replace Trident Nuclear Submarine system. In 1968 the Government signed a treaty promising to abolish these weapons. In 1996 the World Court confirmed that this was a legal obligation, to be pursued in good faith. In 2000, America, France, China and the UK made an 'unequivocal commitment' to achieve the total elimination of nuclear weapons. So much for words and promises. Thousands of nuclear weapons are still ready to use at a moment's notice. We are told terrorists are the big threat to peace today, but what good are nuclear weapons against terrorism?See the full content of this document
