ON FACE value, retirement payouts for public workers are more substantial. According to accountancy firm Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, a private employee would need to save 37% of their salary to get the same pension as a public counterpart.

However the Pensions Policy Institute found that the value of a public sector pension had dropped by 25% in recent years.
