SIR - Despite a small 1% decrease in the overall numbers of animals used in experiments, Home Office statistics released recently (July 27) raise concerns over a rise in the use of genetically modified animals.
It is widely accepted by many scientists that using GM animals to study human diseases does not offer the most reliable or relevant research solutions, as illustrated by the disappointing results obtained over the last two decades in studies on cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and cancer research. Unfortunately, due to the fact that this technology uses more animals than classical approaches, instead of resulting in a decrease in numbers, the use of GM animals has increased by 33% in 2009 as compared to 2000.See the full content of this document
