SIR - I wish to correct a statement made by Mr E Lloyd when he states that 'children in Dublin no longer run around barefooted as they did when Westminster was in control of their government'.

Children ran around barefooted in Southern Ireland in the 1960s, 40 years plus after independence, and an honest Irish politician of that time stated that Ireland was heading to be the first Third World country in Europe. Ireland was saved by the UK negotiating their joint entry into the Common Market. They then proceeded to become one of the most subsidised nations per head of population in the world.
