Summary
There seem to be two Tony Blairs tackling the problem of terrorism. One Tony steadfastly confronted the IRA with a combination of determination and flexibility. His message was: 'You can't get what you want by trying to frighten us, even if you keep it up for a hundred years. I understand why you are doing this, but the roots of the problem go back a long way and can't be eradicated overnight. The people whose interests you claim to represent have some genuine grievances and I hope to prove that there are better ways of remedying them.'
It's taken a long time and there's still some way to go, but he's taken most of the heat out of it. He reversed the draconian policies which had turned the bombers into hunger-striking martyrs and inspired the idealistic young to imitate them.
