Retro Report July, 1977 - GLORIOUS Ginny Wade earned her place in Wimbledon history when she became the centenary champion at Centre Court yesterday. The British No 1 had waited 16 long and agonising years for this moment and when it came, with her 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Dutch girl Betty Stove, it produced unrivalled scenes of emotion. 'Have you ever seen anything like that in your life before?' said the 31-year-old champion with tears in her eyes. 'They were cheering for the Queen, cheering for me, and even singing.

'There was so much noise I could not even hear what the Queen was saying to me. It is just like a fairytale, and I feel drunk without having had a taste of alcohol for two weeks.'
