Former Mayor Mary Thomas Dies Aged 74

Summary

A FORMER mayor, magistrate, county councillor and author has died, aged 74. Mary Thomas was Mayor of the Borough of Dinefwr from 1992 to 1993 and Carmarthenshire Councils executive board member for education from 1999 until May last year, when she stood down because of ill health. She featured in the Western Mail last week after a book she had recently written on the history of her Llandybie ward led to the return to the village of an Eisteddfod chair 90 years after it was won there. Council leader Meryl Gravell said yesterday, I was terribly saddened to learn of Marys death. She was a good friend and colleague for many years.

I worked closely with Mary both through the WI and the county council and I always respected and admired her commitment to her community of Llandybie. Despite failing health in recent years she was always determined to serve the village of her birth with all her energy. Llandybie has lost one of its most faithful servants.
