HUNDREDS of motorists left stranded on a remote road by heavy snowfall were rescued last night as treacherous weather conditions hit parts of the country.

Durham Police launched the operation after a blizzard forced 130 vehicles to grind to a halt on the A66 near Bowes, Co Durham.
