They may be tiny and largely overlooked but the fungi and mosses of Wales are as important to life as the rainforests, visitors to the Royal Welsh Show heard yesterday.

Launching a strategy to safeguard them, Ray Woods, of conservation charity Plantlife, warned that the humans were polluting fungi out of existence. He said scientists should focus on them because, like the ancient rainforests of Brazil, they could hold "the key" to providing cures for diseases and possibly contribute to future energy needs.
