LEADERS of the rich world meeting at the G8 summit in Italy pledged $20bn yesterday to help feed the hungry in Africa.

The cash - $5bn more than expected, thanks to last-minute offers during discussions at the L'Aquila summit yesterday - is intended to go towards agricultural projects designed to put Africa on the road towards food self-sufficiency, rather than on emergency aid during famines and disasters.
