Boys need extra reassurance and praise to do their best at school, experts said yesterday. Alan Evans, a senior researcher at Cardiff University's school of social sciences, said teachers should be more aware of the different ways boys should be taught. They should even consider single-sex classes for subjects like English where gaps are widest, he said.

It is understood that some maintained schools in Wales are already trying this.
