Summary
Many things are generating a watershed in the practices and lives of the teaching profession which has no parallel in educational history. Part of this is due to the effects of 'knowledge redundancy' - the fact that every 10 or 15 years the knowledge that we have is replaced by new knowledge, making the role of the teacher as a supplier of knowledge a redundant one. Teachers now have to teach the skills to access knowledge, not the knowledge itself.
