THE increasingly bitter relationship between the Government and public sector unions deteriorated further yesterday as the nation prepared for what could be the biggest strikes since 1926.

Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude accused union leaders of engineering "a completely unnecessary self-inflicted wound" at a moment of economic fragility, and said the industrial action would damage the Welsh economy at a time of "public sector recession".
