DISENCHANTED Labour activists need to "stand up and fight" if the party is to have any chance of avoiding defeat at the next general election, Welsh Secretary Peter Hain said last night.

The party has become too defeatist, Mr Hain believes, and he called on individuals from the Cabinet downwards to raise their game if Labour is to have a hope of staying in power.
