Hain Is 'Relaxed' Over Row About His Anti-Us Attack

Welsh secretary Peter Hain last night shrugged off criticisms of his outspoken attack on US foreign policy, despite getting a ticking- off from Cabinet colleagues. The Neath MP's remarks that US policy had 'failed wherever it has been tried' were highly embarrassing for Prime Minister Tony Blair - whose strategy has always been to maintain close links with the White House throughout the Iraq conflict - given he had a key meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last night.

Downing Street refused to comment on what was said during the meeting, held at No 10 to enable Ms Rice to brief the Prime Minister on her tour of the Middle East.
