Summary
Sir - Peter Hain has acknowledged that Labour must do better if they are to meet their pledge of halving child poverty by 2010 (Hain declares his war on inequality in bid to be deputy, February 15). Save the Children welcomes the Welsh Secretary's commitment to wage war on poverty, and his recognition that we need more specific measures if we are to achieve greater equality. One practical measure Peter Hain could take now would be to support Save the Children's call the introduction of seasonal grants for the poorest families at the most expensive times of the year, such as winter, when rising fuel bills can hit those on low incomes hard. Introducing these payments could lift 440,000 children in the UK out of poverty, and be a significant step towards achieving Hain's aim of closing the gap between the rich and poor in our society.
