F EW Welsh battalions have suffered a tour of duty as painful, emotional and demanding as 1st Battalion Welsh Guards' six-month deployment to Afghanistan. The troops were last night back on British soil having seen seven of their comrades killed, including their commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Rupert Thorneloe. And they return to a country questioning ever more intently the purpose of its presence in Afghanistan, and the level of commitment shown to the troops by the politicians in charge.
