Summary
THEWelsh Grand National - now known as the Coral Welsh National - first came to Chepstow Racecourse 60 years ago in 1949. The event dates back to 1895 when it was first held at Cardiff's Ely Racecourse.
It was appropriate that the first Chepstow "National" was won by a Welshman, Dick Francis. Pembrokeshire-born Francis, later to become a best-selling author, had finished second that year in the Aintree Grand National on Roimond so winning the Chepstow race on Mrs C A Hall's 10-year-old Fighting Line was some consolation.See the full content of this document
