Clergy were traditionally regarded as being "called" to devote their whole lives to the church. Their activities, as servants of God, were dictated by conscience rather than a contract of employment.

This was confirmed by the House of Lords in 1986 in relation to a case involving the Presbyterian Church of Wales.
