Hsbc Fears Bird Flu Could Affect 50% of Its Staff

Hsbc yesterday warned that up to half its staff could fall ill or be absent at the height of a bird flu pandemic. The world's third largest bank - which is based in London but has operations in 77 countries - said it was planning for a 'worst case scenario' in which 50% of its 253,000 employees could be off work should the virus spread.

HSBC insisted it did not expect half its staff to contract bird flu and added that the figure included people absent for other reasons, including caring for family and restrictions on travel during the crisis.
