THE Food Standards Agency has confirmed that a proposed 4% increase in meat hygiene charges in abattoirs will not go ahead this autumn. The decision follows pressure from the farming and food industries.

But a new system of calculating charges for official controls in meat plants will go ahead in September following agreement by ministers in all four UK countries. It will be based on the time involved in the inspections at abattoirs and other plants. That means lower charges for some.
